Basque dance is a chance to give to community
For nearly 70 years, the Ontario Basque Club has hosted an annual benefit dinner, auction and dance. The 2016 edition is set for Feb. 27 at Four Rivers Cultural Center.
It features authentic Basque cuisine, a dance performance, live music for public dancing and one of the main highlights, the lamb auction, in which a lamb is sold several times over to raise money for the club.
This year’s event will feature the Beti Alai dancers for entertainment, and the band Amuma Says No will provide the music for dancing.
Dinner starts at 6 p.m., with the dancers performing at 7:30 p.m., followed by the live lamb auction at 8 p.m. Dancing, which concludes the evening, starts at 9 p.m.
The Ontario Basque Club, has been holding the benefit since 1948 and now raises about $10,000 a year, with 100 percent of funds going back to the community, Joe Plaza, president of the club, said.
Chief beneficiaries include the fairgrounds, senior citizens, veterans and the food bank, Plaza said.
It also provides two scholarships to Treasure Valley Community College for students of basque descent.
About 400 to 500 people are expected for the event, Plaza said.
The Club currently has 75 regular members and 19 life members, he said, and participates in such community activities as Global Village. It also sponsors a youth dance group.
The Cultural Center is at 575 S.W. Fifth Ave., Ontario.
